Polyester Canvas

If you are interested in knowing about the most stable canvas to use read on: it is not Belgian linen, which rots in time like cotton canvas, and expands and contracts much more than cotton when humidity levels change. The most stable canvas is polyester, which does not rot and is dimensionally stable. Many Sydney artists have been using polyester strainers supplied by Tamarisque (of Albion St, Surry Hills, Sydney) for many years.

They are simple strainers, not wedged stretchers, because the polyester used is so stable dimensionally that there is no expansion/contraction problem, even in the tropics where humidity levels can vary between 35% and 95%.

The basic scientific investigation underpinning the above preference for polyester is contained in what we have called the ‘Ottawa Conservators Report’ which we have been publishing for many years because it is so important.

    Jason is right about the polester canvases being more than satisfactory. I teach and my students enjoy their qualities. You do not say what part of Pom land you reside but try London Art Shop 132 Finchley Rd.     Where can I find polyester canvas in the US, either mail order or in Los Angeles? I would prefer a roll instead of stretched.

    Hi Bianca!

    I'm in the USA. I know Fredrix makes a 100% polyester canvas, rolls only, called PolyFlax Red Lion. I'm sure if you contact better fine arts suppliers they can order it for you, or you can google it for online retailers. Make sure it's Red Lion, beacuse they also make polyflax/cotton blends.

    And the same can be said about it for canvas printing to, we have used it for our canvas prints for 3 years, never any faults and perfect colour everytime.

    We dont agree really. Poly canvas are not our preferred material, we got for cotton. Our customers generally complain about polycanvas products.

    Poly canvas offers great colour reproduction for our photo to canvas. With other benefits that include no cracked edges and stretches tighter than a cotton canvas.

    Why not use best of both worlds? We use polycotton blends - as most of biggest canvas media producers suggest - blends of cotton and polyester actually have better response to humidity & temperature.
