Artists long to expand their horizons, and explore new directions!
From your comments, we have learned that many of you believe that there is a move from painting on objects to canvas, and even fabric.
Your comments also indicate a trend towards mixed media collage or altered art.
In the U.S., Chroma Teachers are conducting a class entitled: Paper, Paint & Passion. The class description is:
In this class, artists will learn how to create their own multi-layered, textured work using new and vintage paper. Using Interactive paints and mediums, artists will conceal and reveal hidden imagery and text to create a personal narrative. Explore ways of adding texture using the Impasto Gel and Modeling Compound. Tons of fun for those new to collage! From what we are hearing, these classes are always full and have a waiting list. Although this class focuses on using paper as a source of imagery, other artists have incorporated small found objects and elements from nature in their mixed-media works.
Below you will find some artwork created in this "altered" fashion.

Jennifer VonStein
Jennifer VonStein's mixed media pieces are personal narratives, a response to the emotions and memories of life and dreams. Using the ephemera of the past, she uses these transitory and throwaway images to tell a story, incorporating small shells, homespun fabric and paint, as well as making extensive use of image transfers. Surfaces range from canvas to panel to cardboard primed with gesso. More examples of her work can be found at http://www.jennifervonstein.com
Fred Swarr
Fred Swarr's recent "In The Woods" series is inspired by the woods surrounding his home. Using actual branches, some painted, some not, he creates his paintings on canvas once he has designed his composition with the branches. He has even begun to expand his painting onto the frames. More examples of his work at can be found at http://www.fdswarr.com
Helene Fischman
Helene Fischman created these works during her 2007 artist residency at Joshua Tree National Park. According to Helene, "These pieces went through many incarnations, and the images were ultimately based on a poem." Multiple layers of paint and found objects are collaged to reveal multiple meanings. More examples of her work can be found at http://www.helenefischman.com.
Victoria Lansford
Victoria Lansford considers herself a metal smith first. However, she writes that" letting my creativity go in other areas is a near spiritual practice for me, and I find that no matter how seemingly unrelated paper and panels of wood are to gold or silver, the inspirations overlap in a whirlwind of ideas" and calls these collages of paint, paper and calligraphy "Illustracollography (ee-lust-ruh-co-lahg-raphy)." More examples of her work can be found at http://www.victorialansford.com
Certainly, we would love to hear your thoughts and see any art that you may have created in this style - or any other style for that matter. As we learn more, explore more, and create more, we will share our experiences and artwork with you and hope that you will do the same.
Rhonda Knauf is a contemporary folk artist and lives in Connecticut in a circa 1725 home. When she learned of the mixed media idea, she designed a sewing thread cabinet combining Jo Sonja Acrylics with frayed fabric to create a unique 3-D surface. Can you tell which is the real fabric and which is the faux painted fabric?
Cabinet Door
Hi, I'm Ashley. I'm typically a watercolorist, and working on becoming an illustrator. I really want to expand on what materials I use and really look to trying my hand at using some acrylics.
