During the year Chroma has supported the National Art School in Darlinghurst, Sydney, in various ways. As it has done for many years, Chroma joined other businesses and patrons supporting the art world, by offering a painting prize to a graduate at the end of year Degree Show.

Hanna Paine won the Chroma Paints Award with a triptych, one of her works exploring the mystery of experience from a child’s perspective.

On Thursday December 3rd the Degree Show of the National Art School was opened by John McDonald, Art Critic for the Sydney Morning Herald and author of The Art of Australia. His speech addressed the value of an education in the fine arts, reminding graduates that only a small proportion would go on to have careers as fully fledged practising artists. He also described the value of critical thinking and interpreting the world in visual media, where art schools develop these skills. Anita Taylor, director of the school spoke about the school’s proud traditions, especially in drawing and its much anticipated change to a fully independent education provider.

If you have seen the National Art School Degree Show feel free to comment on the variety and quality of the work. We hope that these images stimulate discussion about the role of art schools within Australian culture.
