Alice Springs Quilting Club Inc.
The Territory Quilts Exhibition took place on 21st November this year. Chroma sponsored the group with prizes to the award winners. 88 quilts were exhibited in the beautiful Araluen Cultural Precinct, Witchetty Gallery, Alice Springs N.T. The exhibition was attended by visitors from throughout Australia and Internationally with many delighted expressions of praise for the craftsmanship and creativity involved in the quilts displayed. “Best of Show” from the Non traditional category, was won by Marney Leerson of Alice Springs, for her piece “Tumbling into One Block Wonder”, 189x 189 cm, Cotton.
Marney stated that the design started out at one block at a local workshop but changed as the quilt grew. Extra pelion was used behind the cubes to create a trapunto look.
In the best Amateur category- the winner was Rhyl Hall, “ Alice Opal”, 188 x 158 cm.
In the Small Quilt category-1st place was Barbara Mellon, with “Gum Tree”, 54 x 54 cm, Cotton. Barbara made this quilt in a Quilt Encounter Workshop, S.A. with Lorraine Carthew in 2009, with a great endorsement of the workshop.
The Two Person Quilt category- Glenyce McGauchie of Alice Springs was awarded Highly Commended for “Lavender Hills”, 115 x 134 cm.
For the Small Quilt category- Jenny Armour form Humpty Doo came 1st with “Path Through the Woods”, 87 x 50.5cm, cotton, silk & paper. Jenny states that this design had been in her head for some years but that her teacher at a Darwin workshop assisted with the technical problems to realize the quilt.
In the Miniature category the winner was Chris Knights of Wulagi with “Traditional Marriage”, 39 x 39 cm.
The Art Quilt category the win was taken out by Marney Leerson again , “Hell Hath No Fury”, 60 x 45 cm, Hand dyed cotton fabrics. plastics, synthetics and beading. Marney developed this design with the aid of techniques learnt in Annette Morgan’s workshop in Alice Springs this year.
1st in the Group Quilt Category was Karen Conway, “Norway 2006”, 67 x 81cm, cotton. This quilt that was entered by Karen was made by a group of 10 quilters for her birthday. It was taken form a holiday photograph.
For the large 2 person quilt category- Lea Pearson of Alice Springs,won with “Kirsty’s 21st Quilt” 185 x 160cm.
Glenyce McGauchie also won 1st in the Beginner Quilt category for “The Grapevine”, 240 x 180cm.
For the Large Non-Traditional category, Elizabeth McCallum was first with her quilt “Flutterby Fans”, 210 x 225 cm
Marney Leerson wrapped up another award with “Springtime Poppies”, 198 x 198 cm, 1st in the Mainly Applique category.
Talia Knights of Wulagi took out first in the Junior category with “Coolness”, 185 x 134 cm.
Finally the award for “Best Use of Colour” went to Doreen Dyer of Karama, “Happy 30th”, 228 x 228cm which was entered in the Large Traditional category.
