Anna Leary

After an overseas sojourn Anna Leary returned to Nelson, New Zealand in 2000 to undertake a Bachelor of Visual Arts.
She was awarded the inaugural Toss Woollaston Visual Arts Scholarship that same year, graduated in 2002 and has continued with her art practice.

Through her artwork Anna investigates human existence and explores dynamics between people and place. A significant connection with nature and the ocean is evident in her work, although the reference tends to be metaphorical rather than representational.

Her work often moves beyond traditional perceptions of painting, utilising found, shaped, and three dimensional materials with combinations of acrylic, oil, and mixed media. While often having local & personal reference points, her subject matter and the work itself communicates in a broader context and is not constrained by regional boundaries. Her studio is situated above Nelson’s port overlooking the Tasman Sea and is open by appointment.
