Story Boards for Egerton Primary School by Cool Canvas, UK
Year six students from Egerton Primary School created pieces of exterior art work to be on permanent display on the front wall of the school. Cool Canvas were commissioned by Liz Zsargo, head teacher at the school to create 4 four large colourful story boards depicting the seasons. Community involvement is the centre piece of Cool Canvas’s philosophy towards the creation of art projects with community involvement and links to businesses such as Chroma . The business actively works with community groups or schools, utilizing their technical and organizational skill and links to businesses and professionals to create durable art work for public display.
For the project each child in year 6 at St Mary’s created a silk painting in class, of their own interpretation of one of the seasons. The art works were then photographed and collaged together by the graphics expert from Cool Canvas. Cool Canvas fabricated and installed the colourful printed story boards.
Upon completion Mrs Szargo remarked, “The artwork looks gorgeous! They really do look wonderful.”
One year six pupil said, “My art work looks wicked printed onto our Story Boards….I feel like a real life artist.!”
Through their contribution to the school the children have gained a sense of achievement and pride. Cool Canvas is led by Oliver Wotherspoon, a community artist long involved with working in large community projects. He says that as well as working closely with local people, Cool Canvas works with fund-providers and sponsors to deliver meaningful solutions that represent value for money.
They are dedicated to improving the local environment with their skill and creative engagement. Cool Canvas motivates and encourages artwork to be done through community collaboration. Oliver believes that anything that improves the local environment improves everyone's quality of life. They also conduct creative workshops and use paints sponsored by Chroma.
