CARDWELL ART PRIZE

The Hinchinbrook Regional Arts Association ran the Cardwell Art Prize in June 2010. Chroma joined with local businesses, Oxlades Paint and Art and another art supplier to sponsor the prizes. Hinchinbrook Regional Arts was established in 2001 with a non-for profit charter to add the interest of community arts to the sea side, historic town of Cardwell. In keeping with this, the Association runs a biennial Art Prize in it’s Art Gallery, newly established next to the Cardwell School of Arts.

The 152 entries hung were adjudicated by Dr Sylvia Ditchburn DipFA., GDipMusCur., MCA, PhD. The competition was most inclusive covering a broad range of works over 6 categories encompassing Children’s Secondary and Primary art work , New Media & Photography, Traditional Craft including precious metal, glass, ceramics, textile and timber, Sculpture 3D and Painting and Drawing in any medium. Opening night was a wonderful success, attended by approximately 170 people, with over 500 people visiting during the course of the exhibition.

The Chroma Australia prize was awarded as the People's Choice Award at the close of the exhibition. It was awarded to Eddie Omalanuik for his beautiful work titled "Feeding the Pigeons". This work also took out First prize in Category A Hungworks. Eddie is pictured in the main image and again below with Dr Ditchburn and the winning work.

Nadia Quinn (18) received second prize in Peoples Choice category for her work titled "Himself". Pictured below is Ailsa Reid receiving the prize on behalf of her grand daughter from the President of Hinchinbrook Regional Arts, Kerry Robertson (left).
